The greatness of Akshaya Tritiya, i.e. the third lunar day of the bright fortnight of the month of Vaishakha is described in Holy Scriptures such as the Matsya, Skanda, Bhavishya and Narada Puranas, the Mahabharata etc. The meritorious deeds performed on this day produce imperishable result and infinite returns. That is why it is known as Akshaya Tritiya. It enhances good fortunes. This also marks the beginning of the Satya Yuga and the Treta Yuga. It is the birthdate of Nara-Narayana, Hayagriva and Parashurama, the divine incarnations of Lord Vishnu. On this day of Akshaya Tritiya, Veda Vyasa along with Ganesha began writing the great epic of Mahabharata.
It is one of the three auspicious days as per the Hindu electional astrology. So any auspicious act can be initiated and completed on this day without choosing a Muhurta (auspicious time for a venture) from the Panchaanga (almanac). Such acts as marriage, house-entering, making new purchases of – clothes, gold ornaments, a house, a vehicle, a piece of land, etc.; and beginning of some agricultural work when done on this day bring happiness and prosperity.
Importance of bathing, worshipping and doing hawan in the morning.
The act of bathing in the river Ganga on this days accrues religious merits equal to that earned by visiting all pilgrim places. In case it is not possible, one can definitely earn religious merits by bathing in the Brahma Muhurta (two hours before sunrise) at home itself by first remembering mother Ganga with reverence and invoking her blessed presence in the bath-water. Do pray after taking your bath:
माधवे मेषगे भानौं मुरारे मधुसुदन ।
प्रात: स्नानेन में नाथ फलद: पापहा भव ॥
Meaning: “ O Lord Murari! O Lord Madhusudana! Please be the giver of religious merits of bathing in the early morning with the Sun in the constellation of Aries, and thereby destroy all my sins!
The practice of bathing after applying the unguent made from the powders of seven grains and mixing pious urine of the Desi cow to the batch water gives religious merits. One can earn never-diminishing religious merits by worshipping Lord Narayana and His consort Goddess Lakshmi with flowers, essence, pious lamp, sandalwood paste, unbroken rice, etc. and doing havan with unbroken rice.
Importance of Japa, Fast and Donation
Doing Japa, keeping fast, practicing meditation, self-study, etc. on this day gives never-diminishing fruits as well. One can keep fast even by having a single light meal in a day. The ‘Bhavishya Purana’ states that the religious gifts bestowed on this day become inexhaustible. The donation of specific items like a pitcher, a fan, Oles (balls of sugar), sandals, an umbrella, barley, wheat, rice, cow, clothes etc. imparts religious merits. However, donation ought to be given to a truly deserving and virtuous person. On the most auspicious occasion of Pujyashree’s incarnation day itself the disciples of Pujya Bapuji make a new resolve to begin fresh campaigns of social service in the new year; and by Akshay Tritiya such benevolent campaigns reach their altruistic peak, which endow them with never-diminishing religious merits.
Offering of water to ancestors on this day yields never-diminishing religious merits. Satisfaction of the ancestors paves the way for peace, happiness and prosperity as well as for the birth of divine souls in the family.
Procedure: Invite Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma in their subtle forms to the sesame seeds and unbroken rice respectively. Then invoke your ancestors and pour the mixture of sesame seeds, unbroken rice and water into a vessel thinking as if you are offering that to your ancestors. Thereafter, pray to Lords Dattatreya, Brahmaji and Vishnuji for the emancipation of your ancestors.
A Day of Receiving Blessings
On this auspicious day one should serve parents and elders to satisfy them and get their blessings.
The Spiritual Import of Akshaya Tritiya
The term ‘Akshay’ means imperishable. Everything, including your body and the things of this entire world are perishable. The Supreme Self or the Lord Supreme alone is imperishable. This day inspires us for Self-analysis. It gives us the right perspective to keep our gaze focused on the imperishable Self. The real message of ‘Akshaya Tritiya’ is to keep our faith in great men and Dharma unswerving, and our resolve or attaining God indestructible.
